Sommer Dunn Elias, E-RYT, first experienced post-savasana bliss in a steamy Bikram Yoga studio in Las Vegas. Casually cashing in on a free pass, she was oblivious to the permanent life shift that would come to follow. "It certainly wasn't love at first asana", she recalls. "Despite my resistance to the heat, the undeniable sense of well-being experienced after one class called me back to my mat the very next day… and the day after that… and the next…"
An impassioned love of yoga blossomed organically within Sommer's heart. "I approached my practice with the same burning zeal that empowered me as a competitive dancer and athlete." Her steadfast devotion was rewarded with illustrious mind-body regeneration, highlighted by a dramatic shift in perspective. "Yoga has transformed every cell within my body and illuminated the essence of my being. It's an ongoing process that I know will support me throughout my life…"
Sommer grew up in Minnesota, where the average beer selection pretty much consisted of the big three “pissner”, and the like. (Gross.) Her limited exposure led her to believe that she just wasn’t a beer person. (Sad.) It wasn’t until 2011, during San Diego Beer Week, that her love for (good) beer was sparked. At that time, she was still regularly sipping on Blue Moon (with a splash of OJ, obvs.), when a date had brought her to Toronado for an event. In an attempt to broaden her horizons, he ordered some unmemorable witbier for her, and a Duchesse de Bourgogne for himself. Of course, she helped herself to a sampling, and was shocked by the sweet-tart-tangy dance on her tingling tongue. She recalls thinking, “THIS is beer?! How could this be?!”
Needless to say, it was love at first taste. Immediately immersing herself in the wonderful world that is craft beer, her free time was devoted to touring breweries, going to tastings, reading beer books, taking copious notes, and even dabbling in home brewing. Fast forward to the present. The guy didn’t last, but her love affair with bread soda is hotter than ever. Her tastes have long evolved to expand beyond sours, but she's an IPA gal at heart. As a Yoga Instructor by day, and a beer fiend by night, her M.O. is “Detox. Retox. Repeat.”
"I like to think of myself as a 'brewvangelist', as I’m always up for the opportunity to introduce the hoplessly beerless to a new brew that will suit their fancy. See, to me, everyone is a beer person -- they just may not know it yet."
Today, it is more evident than ever that brew love truly is her true love!
